President Says Broadband “A Necessity, Like Water and Electricity” As Lawmakers Weigh Critical Infrastructure Solutions

Washington, D.C. – Connect Americans Now (CAN) executive director Richard T. Cullen released the following statement Wednesday on remarks from President Joe Biden noting the critical importance of investment in expanding broadband access.

“Connect Americans Now commends President Biden for reiterating his commitment to closing the broadband gap in every American community,” said Richard T. Cullen, executive director of CAN. “CAN agrees with the president that broadband is a necessity, not a luxury, and calls on Congress to deliver on the urgent need for substantial investments in deployment, adoption and skills training to ensure every American can unlock the full potential of 21st century digital tools.”

During a visit to La Cross, Wisconsin on Tuesday, President Biden said broadband “isn’t a luxury, it’s now a necessity, like water and electricity.” The president also reiterated his commitment to ensuring broadband “is available in every American home.”
